The Windows XP Challenge
Home / Preface Entry
I have always held a deep fascination with and admiration for the technology of the past. I'm practically unable to turn down adopting each stray computer and laptop I come across, and over time I've amassed for lack of a better term a hoard of machines most of which were made before I was even born. I compulsively tinker with and modify each, and am drawn towards using older software and operating systems.
I was recently tasked with a school project with the goal of leaving my comfort zone. For the next two weeks each of us is meant to impliment some kind of disruption and change to our lives as to push us outside of what we are used to. This has given me an interesting opportunity to try something I've wanted to do for quite awhile now. And that is, what would it be like to use nothing but Windows XP on an era-appropriate computer in 2025! Nothing could possibly go wrong... (*´▽`*)
I'm no stranger to adoption of outdated computing platforms. In fact, I already use Windows 7 as my primary operating system for all of my daily tasks, so I'm used to tiny compromises and workarounds to run my preferred software and games. Windows XP, however, is another level above that. Although Windows 7 hasn't seen mainstream support for 5 years now, its much closer to the modern windows operating systems we're used to and still recieves security updates from microsoft for those who know where to look. To those willing, its not all that impossible to close the gaps and run the vast majority of software. Windows XP on the other hand, turns 24 years old this year. It lacks a huge amount of the standards and features we expect out of a modern OS, such as proper multithreading, windows APIs, and even 64-Bit support. In the current year the amount of official up to date software that still supports Windows XP can be counted on two hands. That being said, its seen incredible amounts of community support in recent years, bringing some modern programs and usability back to the OS. But first before we get into the logistics of running Windows XP in 2025, lets set some basic rules for the challenge.

Windows XP Challenge Rules
- Windows XP on era appropriate hardware should be used for all computing tasks except for those deemed absolutely unavoidable for the next two weeks.*
- Era appropriate alternatives for other technologies should also be used when possible. E.g. using an iPod or walkman to listen to music rather than a smartphone.
- Each day a reflection and summary of the challenge will be written and posted to this website! ( . .)φ__
* Excluding Saturday and Sunday
And with that, as of 3/2/2025, the challenge has begun! This site will recieve daily updates for the next two weeks in the form of posts and fun UI changes and features. Depending on when you're reading this, quite a few are likely written already, so go check them out! You can find a directory of days and other pages on the lefthand side, as well as buttons at the bottom of each page for navigation. Please feel free to leave a message on the comments page as well if you'd like to share any thoughts!
Hopefully this website will also serve others as a repository of information and software regarding the usage of Windows XP in the modern day. Thank you so much for reading ♡(>ᴗ•)
Disclaimer: There is a common misconception that using Windows XP connected to the internet can get you infected with malware without any user interaction. This is not true. However, please remember that Windows XP is an end of life operating system, meaning it no longer recieves security updates from microsoft and can be vulnerable to exploits. I do not condone or recommend using Windows XP with personal information and accounts you are not willing to lose. I will be using burner and alt accounts for the important services I use during this challenge.
Remember, you are the best defense against malware. Practice safe internet usage always, and have fun.
